The tiny village of Scott's Head sits at the southern tip of Dominica, where the Atlantic and Caribbean converge. Hike out to Scott's Head peninsula at sunset for great views of Dominica's lush landscape.

Whales aren't the only cetaceans around Dominica - these rough-toothed dolphins were a fabulous surprise. They are typically found far off-shore, but the deep water around Dominica allows them to venture a bit closer than normal. More than two dozen of them flirted with the boat for a quarter of an hour before they grew bored and moved on. We tried to get in the water with them, but they seemed quite disinterested.
I love the windswept trees and bushes lining the eastern coast. Dominica is right in the heart of Hurricane Alley, and the vegetation here is built to withstand it. The last direct hit was 1995, but it was Hurricane David in 1979 that did the most damage - 145mph winds killed 56 people and left 75% of the island homeless.
The sulfur pools at Screw's blend in with the surrounding rain forest. The hottest pools at the top are fed by by cool waterfalls, so you can keep a cool head while soothing the muscles below. Great way to wind.

Tip: The owner loves his reggae music, so don't expect the tranquil sounds of falling water and chirping birds. It's all fun though, and adds to the Caribbean flavor.
