THE SPACE
★ The house
Three levels. The ground floor is open plan: kitchen, lounge, and dining all in one. Two big sofas, a wall-mounted TV, a heat pump, and bifold doors out to the courtyard. Books and a giant Jenga for downtime. This is where everyone lands at the end of the day.
The bedrooms are all upstairs, away from the living space. Four on the middle level, one more up top with its own ensuite. Several open onto balconies with rooftop views across Riccarton. A heater in each, and fans for warmer nights.
★ The kitchen
Set up for cooking proper meals, which keeps the costs down on a family stay. Wall oven, gas hob, rangehood, full-size fridge-freezer, dishwasher, and microwave. Filter coffee machine, plunger, rice cooker, and air fryer. Granite benchtops and a breakfast bar with stools. Tea and coffee on the bench when you arrive. The dining table seats six.
★ Sleeping
Four queens and a single, sleeping nine. Fresh, crisp linen on every bed. Two bedrooms have their own ensuite, including the private queen up top. The other three share the main bathroom, which has a bath and a separate shower. A separate toilet on the ground floor keeps mornings easy with nine of you.

● Little Spicy, big, generous Chinese plates made for a hungry group
● Sasuke, a small Japanese spot in the Windmill Centre doing ramen, katsu curry, and sashimi
● Ngon Ngon Bánh Mì, fresh Vietnamese bánh mì, crepe cakes, and Vietnamese coffee
● Hello Vietnam, hearty Vietnamese, with phở the pick on a cold night
● Park Ranger, a proper cafe for brunch, salads, sandwiches, and baked goods
● Dux Dine, a vegetarian and pescatarian menu in a heritage villa with a sunny courtyard
● Welcome Chinese Vegetarian, long-running vegan and vegetarian Chinese, dumplings and claypot rice (Upper Riccarton)
● Daphne’s, a BYO dim sum institution at Church Corner, book ahead for a big table
