San Ignacio Hummingbird Rest Cabin

This property is delightful! Jenny and Peter are welcoming, helpful and delightful hosts. The cabin was clean inside and out. It's beautiful, in a breezy, jungly, shaded way. It's not air conditioned but you don't need it. It is thoughtfully stocked, we cooked a few times. This cabin is for 1-2 people, there are two bigger ones on the property. There are also many restaurants about 5 minutes away in town. The location was perfect for the ruins we wanted to explore and the Iguana Sanctuary. We would definitely start again!

Private, Pristine yet close to town

Beautiful property in walking distance to town. Gracious hosts who work hard to provide a pleasant experience. Helpful advice on the locality. Hummingbirds visiting all day. Iguanas venture by for added company. Highly recommend location.

Staying in the heart of Belize

This cottage supplied all our needs - a place to make breakfast and a place to relax. Peter and his wife Jenny were very kind and helpful as the area was unfamiliar to us. Television and wifi were good. There is no AC if that is important to you. This was a good central place from which to take our journeys to the Mayan ruins.

Perfect little spot

We loved staying in Hummingbird Rest! We were there 3-4 nights and it was the sweetest little property! Peter and family are fantastic and helpful! Easy walking (or cab if you are going further) to downtown San Ignacio. We love the Sat market in San Ignacio, and exploring! Would definitely come back and stay here!

Lovely little house in San Ignacio

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for three weeks and our stay couldn’t have been more enjoyable. Peter and Jenny and their two adult kids were amazingly helpful, friendly and conscientious hosts. The house is tiny, a large airy bedroom with a big comfy bed, nice screened kitchen, a tiny bathroom and a large, spacious patio, where we whiled away many a hot afternoon. Iguanas and hummingbirds were regular visitors, as was Tootsie, the friendliest of the five dogs the owners keep, along with a couple of cats and various rescue animals. The location is great, close to grocery stores and about a mile to town, but taxis are abundant and cheap. It’s also a great base for tours to the local sites. There are several restaurants in town, some upscale, others Belizean, and all of them interesting in their own way. The only real downsides were that the cottage is in a residential and commercial mixed neighbourhood so it’s sometimes a little noisy with music and barking dogs. All in all, we had a great time and felt as if we were leaving friends when it was time to go home.

Beautiful and simple

We had a great time in San Ignacio! The Hummingbird Rest was the perfect place to rest our heads each night after our adventures. Highly recommend asking Peter to help you book tours as we had the best time on our ATM and Cave Tubing tours he arranged. The cabana is perfect for two and includes all the amenities you’ll need for a short stay. We enjoyed hot showers, a comfy bed and gorgeous wake-up calls from the sun (and birds)! Thank you for a great stay!

Great place to stay!

We really enjoyed our time at Hummingbird Rest! It was everything my wife and I wanted for our honeymoon. First, Peter and his family are all incredibly nice and have a wonderful property. They are always around if you need something, but very respectful of your privacy. The property is a great size and the home is tucked away amongst the garden. We were there for four nights and wish we could have stayed for more. There is a nice size kitchen area and a nice bedroom. The other wonderful thing is the porch area where you have a hammock, Adirondack chairs, and a little table and chair set. We spent a lot of time outside in both the morning and evening! The location is close to town- we walked in every day- or a short cab ride. Also, a lot of the tour companies will pick you up at the house and drop you off afterwards. In all, we loved our stay at the property and enjoyed San Ignacio! We would recommend this property - and any property that Peter and his family are involved with managing. Thanks so much!

Beautiful property and wonderful host family

Iguana Roost is located close to town central (see the other reviews). The property is beautiful and appears to be much further out of town. We enjoyed the bird life (including a couple of black ducks), hummingbirds and other birds unfamiliar to us. If you require air conditioning then this place isn't for you but, if you want to stay in a clean, charming, rustic place close to town and a ruins site, then this place is exactly what you're looking for. We chose Iguana Roost as our home away from home for the first 7 days of 15 in Belize. We knew we wanted to establish a base for exploring the central western part of Belize with our goal being to explore the ruins, national parks and reserves around the area. In the process of exploring the country we discovered many fantastic people including the host family of this property. Peter, Jenny, Craig and Kayleigh are all recent transplants in search of a whole new life on terms of their own choosing where they have left the rat race to live the good life and spend more time with family and friends. You won't meet nicer people anywhere. We're very happy with our choice of Iguana Roost.

Wonderful retreat

We were greeted upon arrival by the entire family, including Tootsie and Pudding, and immediately felt welcome and at home. Peter took us on a tour downtown to familiarize ourselves, and our adventures began. The cabin was spotless, and adequate for our needs. We especially enjoyed the deck where we were constantly entertained by a barrage of birds of all descriptions, lizards, scores of iguana and squirrels. Jenny popped by daily to ensure all was well. The location was great, we often walked into town and availed ourselves with the local taxi service for the return ride. The local fry jacks at the nearby shop were super, and the local Chinese food was awesome as well. There are so many local attractions nearby, as well an inexpensive motorcycle rental provided us with the means to explore further afield. Local car rentals were easily obtained to travel further afield. We enjoyed our stay with Peter, Jenny, Craig and Kailey, their warm friendships will be long remembered.

Lovely, Rustic Cottage Near San Ignacio

My husband and I had a perfectly comfortable stay at Iguana Roost, while visiting San Ignacio. The cabin was exactly as pictured online and possessed a great deal of rugged charm, making it the perfect base camp for our inland adventures in the Cayo District. It was close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough away to provide peace and quiet. And the little food shack across the street made the best breakfast fryjacks! Peter and his entire family were thoroughly charming and very helpful during our stay, provinding us with restaurant suggestions and assisting in booking tours. Even the family dog became a fast friend! We had a great time at Iguana Roost, and would recommend it to anyone thinking of staying in San Ignacio for a spell.

Awesome little "home" in the jungle !!!

What an incredible experience was had. I can not say enough how helpful and knowledgeable my host Peter, Jenny, Craig andKayleigh were. Peter never hesitated to answer any questions I had for months before my travel and came to pick me up at the bus stop when I arrived in town. A perfect welcome after a very long days journey. Upon arrival the entire family came out to greet including Tootsie the family dog whom I managed to squirl away a little doggy time every day.The accommodations are exceptional for a single traveler or a couple. Bedroom, kitchen and bathroom with a bit of lived in look that gives it quite a homey feel. I sat out every morning with the hummingbirds on the patio and a good morning greeting from Trixie. The abode is very close to town and some Mayan sights to include Cahal Pech(walking distance) and Xunantunich Temples(easy short bus ride). Don't bother signing up for the tours to these locations if you are in town. Each are only $5 american to visit if you are not looking for a guided tour. The bus is incredibly inexpensive - I believe was less than $4 round trip. I walked into town most of the time as it was a quick 10-15 minute walk. The zoo is about a 2 hour bus ride - but worth the journey. ($15 admission and $8 round trip bus) Note -make sure to leave San Ignacio no later than noonish as the Zoo closes at 4:45. Jenny graciously gave me a lift up to the pool up at Cahal Pech Village Resort for some pool time. Nice place to hang out with a fantastic view of San Ignacio and the best nachos I've ever had!! Fruit and vegetable stands are plentiful as well as markets and a butcher. Food stands and eating establishments are everywhere and incredibly inexpensive. Iguana Roost is the perfect place for the budget conscious traveler with exceptional host to help you with your adventures.

Peaceful tropical stay

Peter, Jenny, Craig and Kayleigh were such wonderful hosts. They were so kind and welcoming. The house was clean and cozy. It was the perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring around the San Ignacio area. This was the first place we stayed on our honeymoon and San Ignacio was a great place to explore, from the mayan ruins to the tasty local food it was a great tropical jungle getaway just walking distance from town. The entire family made us feel welcome and at home while we were there. Thanks for such a great stay. Evan and Caitlin

Awesome folks in a cozy jungle atmosphere!

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Iguana Roost. Peter, Jenny, Craig, Kayleigh and their furry friend, Tootsie, welcomed me and made me feel totally at home. When I arrived the whole family was there and there was a beautiful handmade card welcoming me - (I'm keeping it for it's exceptional detailed work!) The cabin is perfect for a solo traveler or a couple. It's got everything you need with a bedroom and an independent kitchen and bathroom. The bedroom is equipped with TV, books, films. Outside it's got a private space with table and hammock. The cabin and the whole property is very beautifully and well maintained. There are tons of hummingbirds around.. While I was there, there were birds, iguanas, a Toucan, tarantulas, butterflies and wild ducks making their way.... The whole property is a tiny bubble of tropical magic. Every member of the family was quite exceptional and I enjoyed exchanging with each one of them. They were eager to help me find my way, to give me tips and advise me in what way they could, but what I enjoyed the most about them is their passion and awe for the wild life in their own property; it quickly became contagious! As for the location, I found it perfect. It was just a couple of minutes drive away from the center of town. You can go by foot or just take a taxi for $2.50. As for the tours, the tour providers came to pick me up right at the door and brought me back at the end of the day. There are tons of things to do around San Ignacio. I recommend doing all you can. You will not regret it. The beauty of the caves, the archeological sites, the reserves... everything waits to be discovered in this treasured place. I also enjoyed the restaurants. (Welcome vegetarians!) Would I recommend this property to other travelers? I definitely would and without hesitancy. Even if I would have done nothing at all during my stay I would have deeply enjoyed the Iguana Roost for its diversity and friendly owners. Thank you Pete and family! You helped to make this trip most memorable.
