Countryside Schoolhouse Overlooking Rolling Hills
Sweeping views of the high hills of Pierce County, a piece of Elmwood history dating back to 1907, and nothing but the sound of nature to welcome you home. This is THE place to truly disconnect.
Simple amenities allow you to slow down while the great outdoors await you.
Bring your ATV, trails are right outside your door.
Love fishing? Nugget Lake is walking distance & you`re a scenic road away from the Mississippi Coast, Pepin, and Maiden Rock for the top tourist attractions in the area.
The space maintains most of it`s original character, offering high ceilings, original hardwood floors, newly renovated bathroom, and picturesque views from a light-flooded room high in the countryside.
The original open-concept, featuring one large room, is equipped with an incredibly comfortable memory foam queen bed, a twin bed, and a cozy couch. The property sits on 1.5 acres with a private well.
The kitchen is stocked with cookware, utensils and a pantry of essentials to help you feel right at home. Wake up, grind your own local beans, and sip your pour over coffee from the front steps.
The pantry is stocked with sea salt, pepper, some basic cooking herbs, local coffee beans, and herbal tea.
We have a work desk with some writing supplies, colored pencils and crayons, board games, a record player with a few of our favorite records on hand, and a handpicked collection of books to cozy up and dive into.
There is a brand new open-concept bathing room featuring a restored clawfoot bathtub & pedestal sink, a private restroom nook, and complete with fresh towels, body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. The linen and supplies used inside the home were selected to be easy on the environment and are free of harsh chemicals so those with sensitive skin can rest easy.
With a well and mound septic system, are mindful of how we`re maintaining the land around us with eco-friendly products. We ask that you join us in those efforts. If you`ve never used a septic before, there will be some basic, easy-to-follow instructions inside to help navigate what can and cannot go down the drain.
The house has a newly installed mini split, ensuring you stay cool on those sweltering days and cozy on cool nights. With soft throws scattered throughout the space, cozy is guaranteed. There are also a few portable fans + space heaters for your use.
Outside, there`s a small playset and a wide open backyard to set up a game of volleyball, throw a blanket down and relax under the blue sky, or watch the sun roll over the house and fall beneath the horizon. Bring a tent, camp under the a blanket of stars. At minimum, catch a sunset from the front porch...there`s nothing like it.
We are deep in the countryside yet next to some incredible outdoor attractions that will immerse you in the land`s beauty. Nugget Lake is just a stones throw where you can hike miles of trails, rent a canoe or kayak, or take your fishing pole and catch a nice bass for dinner.
Please Note/Read before booking: We want to be crystal clear... this is not a 5-star hotel but a really nature-forward experience. That said, please read the following to be sure THIS is what you`re looking for.
-Our space is historic and we`ve intentionally maintained many of the original features, adding only what was necessary to make us comfortable in the modern world. In other words, there`s running water and a toilet. You`re glamping, ok? That said, the magic of this space is in embracing the slow down. We are sharing an experience that`s designed to disconnect you from the hustle and bustle. -We are surrounded by box elder trees, which means we get box elder bugs. No one escapes box elder bugs, not even the swankiest updated house along the country mile stretch. You may find a few to greet you upon entry or come to say hi during your stay. We have a broom & small vaccum for you to use should they get too comfortable. -There is no TV. We do NOT have wifi and cell reception is spotty. If you need to work, we recommend bringing your own hot spot, which does OK for us. If you`re looking for all the high tech bells & whistles, this experience isn`t for you. -the bathing room is an extension of the main room & only has a bathtub, designed for long soaks as you gaze out the window and sip on some hot tea. There is no bathroom door & the toilet is only semi-private (it`s built into a closet nook). If you`re not already comfortable with the folks you`re traveling with, you`re about to be. -We have a water heater that once emptied, needs to be refilled with cold well water and reheated. Be conservative with your hot water usage, especially if you want that bathtub soak. -When the corn get`s plowed, critters tend to scatter and some make their way into our house through cracks in the 100+ year old foundation. If you find one has come to lay it`s final rest during your stay, say a little prayer -- give us a call, we are happy to come remove it.
The Surrounding Area: Maiden Rock is about 30 minutes West and is a beautiful drive to the Mississippi Coast. There you`ll find some shops full of local treats, amish treasures, and unforgettable lookouts. This is a perfect route for those who are traveling by motorcycle.
While Elmwood is the nearest village, Downsville, is a little unincorporated town that is a perfect stop promising a charming afternoon. -Explore the Red Cedar State Trail, which is approximately 14.5 miles long along the Red Cedar River -Visit Simply Dunn, Dunn County Pottery (a sweet little studio full of hand-thrown ceramics that is always open & is self-pay) -Eat at Scatterbrain Cafe and enjoy fresh-made bread, hearty sandwiches and delicious hand-brewed local coffee. Don`t sleep on the fresh-made cranberry bread. It`s delicious. -The Creamery Inn recently re-opened in early May of 2024 as a beautiful boutique where you`re sure to find some sweet treasures.
As you`re driving our way, you`ll likely find homes promoting firewood, fresh eggs, and produce from their gardens. We recommend stopping, if not just for the experience but to grab some supplies for your stay. Our favorite place for groceries is at Menominee Co-Op in Menominee, Wisconsin, which is about a 25 minute drive from the property. If their neighbor, Hive and Hallow, is open, don`t miss out the chance to pick up some fresh flowers for your stay.
Guests will check themselves in using a key code at the front door. The guest code will be provided after booking.
We respect this space as an idyllic escape from the city. You`ll have the entire space to yourself and have access to me by phone for any questions during your stay.
This is quintessential Wisconsin countryside, and it`s not uncommon to go an entire day without seeing a single car drive by. We do have friendly & caring neighbors who live on these stretch of roads, so please slow down, watch for kids & deer, and enjoy the drive =)
In the Neighborhood -Miles of ATV trails right outside your front door. -long country roads, perfect for a motorcycle ride. -Nugget Lake is about 4 minutes away (with hiking trails, fishing, canoe rentals and camping available). -Humble Pie Farm has organic flowers, produce and starter plants, and is just 3 minutes down the road. -Exile Bar is 2 miles down the road (15 minute bike ride). -Lost Creek Stables (Best Horseback riding lessons in the county) is less than 20 minutes away. -Maiden Rock (one of the most gorgeous scenic views overlooking the Mississippi, is just 23 minutes away. -Vino in the Valley (vineyard, wine tasting, tractor rides, restaurant, live music & event space). -Eau Galle Reservoir Overlook in Spring Valley is a 21 minute drive. -Rush River (with the highest rate of trout per mile) is just a few miles from the property.
Nearby `big cities` -Maiden Rock is less than 30 minutes West -Menominee is about 35 minutes to the East. -River Falls is about 38 minutes West -Minneapolis / St. Paul is just an hour NorthWest -Eau Claire is about an hour SouthEast.
We recommend having a vehicle to really explore the magic of Pierce County, it`s scenic views and winding back-country roads. We personally think the best way is by motorcycle.
Nugget Lake Country Park and Humble Pie Farm, which are both down the street, less than a 5 minute drive from the property, could easily be accessed by bike or a good 25ish minute walk.
There is no driveway, just a mowed lawn for you to drive up on and park in front of the entrance. The rest of the property is for you to explore by foot, and not drive around on.
