Craigielea Cottage - a cottage that sleeps 6 guests in 3 bedrooms
Craigielea Cottage is a Grade C Historic building renovated to the highest of standards and located in the quiet hamlet of Braehead, near Newton Stewart. The cottage has modern, comfortable and cosy accommodation for 6 with views across open farmland to the Galloway Hills, the Cree Estuary and out to sea. The conservatory is the perfect place to relax after a day of adventuring to discover the many delights of this wonderful coastline and contrasting landscapes of natural beauty.
The cottage is an excellent base for exploring this unspoilt part of Scotland with easy access to quaint fishing ports, like Portpatrick; historic sites at Glenluce Abbey and Isle of Whithorn and the nearby Galloway Forest Park, Britain's first designated Dark Sky Park, and the UK's largest forest which has walks and bike routes for all abilities.
South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and for the diversity of the outdoor and recreational pursuits. The area is renowned for golf, birdwatching, fishing, walking and the many beautiful gardens of South West Scotland. Logan Botanic Gardens, Castle Kennedy and Threave Gardens are all within easy reach as well as many smaller gardens and nurseries.
An ideal destination for active families, the local area is a natural playground. A short drive takes you to Cairnsmore of Fleet National Nature Reserve, one of the wildest areas within South West Scotland and a site of Special Scientific Interest within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere. The area boasts a wide range of wildlife habitats with peregrine falcon, hen harriers and red deer often seen and is a wildlife enthusiasts paradise. Not for the faint hearted is the Graham from which the reserve takes its name – Cairnsmore of Fleet, rising 711m in elevation, from the top are the most spectacular views which on a clear day can include the Isle of Man and Ailsa Craig off the Ayrshire coast.
Nearby Newton Stewart offers all the usual facilities of a small rural town including numerous places for eating out, a cinema, swimming pool at the Merrick Leisure Centre and supermarkets.
Bladnoch Whisky Distillery, one of Scotland's oldest with its Visitor Centre and cafe are just a 2 minute drive away, where you can take a tour of the distillery and estate. Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town is only 3 miles from the cottage, and hosts regular events including the extremely popular Book Festival each Autumn. Slightly further afield is Port Logan Fish Pond, a 200 year old sea fish larder near Port Logan home to wide variety of local marine life and has a fascinating history.
Dumfries and Galloway as a whole is renowned for its unspoilt beaches. Whether you travel east or west from the cottage, a day on the coast never fails to please, with some of the most popular destinations including Mossyard, Garlieston, Monreith, Sandhead and Ardwell Bay.
