This is the 11th Wright Usonian where I have been able to experience an overnight stay. Each one has been a memorable experience and Woodside was no exception. The thing that I enjoyed most was reading the 40 page detailed description of the building of Woodside by Dr. Davis who was the original owner. I was surprised that Dr. Davis had frequent phone communications with Wright during the construction process even though the architect was in the middle of multiple projects (including the Guggenheim Museum). If you decide not to prepare your own meals in the gourmet kitchen, I would highly recommend having lunch at the 1912 Wilson-Vaughn mansion, a Georgian inspired home that was designed by Samuel Plato, an African-American architect. I also enjoyed a dinner at the Tomahawk restaurant that is housed in a former private club built in 1907 in Mission style.I continue to be most appreciative of Matthew and other like-minded home owners who make their Wright designed Usonians available to the public. Spending a couple of days in one of these homes is the only way to really appreciate Wright's vision.
