Significant Safety Hazards, Maintenance Negligence, and Ethical FailuresThe Hideaway Haus failed to meet basic standards of safety, cleanliness, and professional management. Upon arrival, we found used coffee grounds in the machine; it was only while attempting to wash this dirty equipment that we discovered the property had no hot water. The water heater displayed a "Vent Blocked" error—a critical life-safety hazard involving gas-fired exhaust. Rather than dispatching a professional, the host requested that I troubleshoot the exterior venting and manually reset the unit. Expecting a guest to perform amateur maintenance on a malfunctioning gas appliance is gross professional negligence and an unacceptable liability risk. The property's condition was consistently poor: stained linens, cracked glassware, a dirty rug, a non-functional bathroom fan, and a toilet that was not properly seated to the floor. Furthermore, the host’s support hours end at 8:00 PM EST. For a West Coast property with a 4:00 PM PST check-in, this provides only one hour of support for arrival issues—a fundamentally flawed logistical structure.Despite the home being uninhabitable, the host refused a refund and declined to cancel the reservation. By keeping the dates blocked, they ensured the property could not be rebooked, effectively holding our funds hostage for a stay that could not safely occur. Future travelers should seek more reliable and ethical accommodations elsewhere.
