## Emplacement
Gérardmer is a commune in the Grand-Est region of France, in the Vosges department of Lorraine. Nicknamed the Pearl of the Vosges by Victor Hugo's brother Abel, it lies not far from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. Also a winter sports resort, the town is known for its landscapes and cultural activities.
Gérardmer, according to historians, was founded in 1285, and has a long shared history with the Duchy of Lorraine and the Canons of Remiremont abbey. Established as a parish in the mid-sixteenth century, the town grew strongly in the eighteenth century with the arrival of the railroads, and then with the arrival of textile manufacturers from Alsace, following the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine by Germany.
Although the town suffered much destruction during the Second World War, it continues to be appreciated by tourists for its charm and sports facilities. It still boasts an interesting architectural heritage, as well as exceptional landscapes.
